A gauntlet mitten has a longer cuff that extends beyond the wrist. If you find a gap between your coat sleeve and your winter gloves, that extra coverage is the main reason to consider one.
Start with how you will wear the mittens. A longer cuff can be useful on winter walks or when standing outdoors, but the best fit depends on your coat sleeves as well as your hands.
What does the longer cuff do?
A gauntlet adds coverage at the wrist and lower forearm. Our men's and women's gauntlet mittens combine an extended cuff with an elasticated wrist. The cuff needs to sit comfortably with your sleeve rather than bunching up or leaving a gap.
Check whether your coat has enough room for the cuff underneath, or whether the mitten cuff will comfortably sit over the sleeve. Do not assume every gauntlet will fit over a thick coat.
Gauntlet mittens or ordinary gloves?
Choose according to coverage and the tasks you need to do. A mitten keeps the fingers together in one compartment; a glove allows separate finger movement. A longer cuff changes wrist coverage, but it does not make a mitten waterproof or suitable for every winter activity.

How to choose the size
Measure around the palm at the knuckles, excluding the thumb, then use the measurements on the particular product page. Men's and women's size labels are different, so a size from another pair is not a reliable substitute.
When trying them on, check that you can move your fingers and thumb comfortably and that the wrist feels secure without pressure. Try them with the coat you intend to wear. See our sizing FAQ and returns policy before ordering a gift.
Can gauntlet mittens get wet?
A long cuff does not provide waterproofing. Avoid saturation and follow the care instructions for the finish. Our guide to rain and drying sheepskin gloves explains the difference between water resistance and waterproofing.
